Comprehensive Eye Check-up

Comprehensive eye examination at MCVI

At MCVI, we perform various tests and procedures to examine eyes which may range from simple ones like vision testing to complex tests including retina examination to see inside the eye. These evaluate not only your vision but the health of your eyes. The comprehensive eye examination may take half an hour or so, depending upon the condition of the eye. Tests include detailed history, vision assessment, eyeglasses power, binocular eye assessment, colour vision, slit lamp examination, retina imaging, and intraocular pressure.

Recommended Schedule of Routine Eye Examination:

  • First eye examination: between 2 to 5 years of age (infants if any issue observed)
  • School Age Children (6 to 19 years): Annually, or every six months for those wearing eyeglasses
  • Adults: Every 2 years, or annually for those wearing eyeglasses or with ocular issues

Prof. Monica Chaudhry has authored books "Low Vision" and "Contact Lenses". Her book on "Refraction and Prescription" is known to be one of the best in prescribing spectacle powers.

Contact Lens — Centre of Excellence

Contact lens centre at MCVI

Contact lenses are safe medical devices which need professional fitting and aftercare. These lenses should not be purchased over the counter or without proper eye examination. Complications and dropouts happen because of bad fitting lenses or poor-quality lenses. Regular follow-up and proper aftercare is important for all contact lens users.

At MCVI we have successfully fit patients with earlier failures or those having trouble with existing lenses. Contact lenses provide superior quality of vision, wider field of view, and cosmetic advantage over spectacles. Contact lenses suitable for all age groups are available at MCVI — we dispense reusable lenses, disposable lenses, and ones recommended for sleep too.

Prof. Monica Chaudhry was awarded "The Best Global Educator Award" in 2015 in the UK by IACLE. She was the first Fellow of IACLE in India. She has set up this Centre of Excellence and has been presenting and chairing sessions in national and international conferences on contact lenses.

Speciality Contact Lenses

Speciality contact lenses at MCVI

Speciality contact lenses are different from traditional soft contact lenses because they are designed to simultaneously improve vision and treat an eye condition or disease. Anyone having eye conditions like astigmatism, keratoconus, dry eye, complications of Lasik, corneal scar, injury, or presbyopia and desiring to wear contacts must visit MCVI for speciality contact lenses.

Cosmetic Lenses

These lenses are popular and used to enhance or alter the colour of the eye. If you belong to the world of glamour, fashion, theatre, or Bollywood, or are fond of experimenting with your personal looks, these lenses are for you. They are also prescribed for vision correction. MCVI has special lenses for correction of colour blindness.

Prosthetic Lenses

Special coloured lenses used for hiding injuries or disfigurements of the eye due to trauma, birth defects, or corneal eye diseases. They also help block excess light and glare, and improve eye functions in conditions like Aniridia, Albinism, and Nystagmus. MCVI provides these lenses with customised specifications for a perfect individual fit.

Custom Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP)

Hard contact lenses that enable oxygen to pass through to the eye. They retain their shape when on the eye, enabling durability and easy care. RGP lenses are beneficial in certain eye conditions or special powers where soft contact lenses cannot adequately correct vision.

Toric Lenses

Lenses with special powers on vertical and horizontal orientations to correct astigmatism (cylindrical spectacle powers). Astigmatism correction is best done with toric lenses and needs special skills in fitting and evaluating. Prof. Monica Chaudhry has experience in fitting bitoric lenses too.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Contact lenses prescribed for patients who have both distance and near correction. Suitable for all age groups, especially 40+ for near correction. Multifocal contact lenses are all-in-one contacts for reading, distance, and everything in between.

Orthokeratology (Overnight Vision Correction)

Orthokeratology at MCVI

Orthokeratology is an alternative to vision correction that also controls myopia progression in children. It corrects your eyesight without wearing spectacles or undergoing surgery. Ortho-K is a method which allows the patient to sleep with a special contact lens that works while eyes are closed at night. Sleeping with these lenses and removing them in the morning, the wearer will have clear vision throughout the day without using contacts or glasses. It is a safe and FDA-approved method.

Prof. Monica Chaudhry has been one of the initial Ortho-K practitioners in India. Several children have been fitted by her with Ortho-K lenses and have successfully shown control in myopia progression with this technique.

If you do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses or don't qualify for laser eye surgery, visit MCVI clinic and ask for Orthokeratology.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus treatment at MCVI

Keratoconus is a relatively uncommon eye condition where the cornea becomes thinner and bulges forward, causing sensitivity to light and glare along with vision impairment that does not get best corrected with glasses. MCVI has almost all types of available brands — Menicon, Rose K, Boston, One Fit, Keracare, Kerasoft, Silverline, and more.

Prof. Monica Chaudhry is a nationally known expert on keratoconus. She trains and conducts lectures to optometrists and ophthalmologists. She has patients referred across India for all kinds of speciality lenses.

Rose K and Menicon Lenses

Rose K contact lenses are unique and have been one of the best corneal lenses used in restoration of sight in keratoconus and other irregular corneas. Prof. Monica Chaudhry has been associated as senior educator of Rose K lenses for almost two decades and has success stories of patients using these lenses for years. These lenses are custom designed for the eye to achieve improvement in vision.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral contact lenses provide both clear vision and superior comfort. These lenses are much larger in diameter and fit beyond the cornea. They are ideal for patients who have irregular cornea, dryness, or keratoconus. They are significantly more comfortable and less sensitive on the cornea compared to corneal lenses. MCVI has the best of all types of scleral lenses available in India.

Myopia Management

Myopia management at MCVI

Myopia is increasing in prevalence worldwide and is expected to affect up to 50% of the global population by 2050. Myopia increases the risk of open-angle glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic macular degeneration — so controlling its progression may help preserve vision in old age.

MCVI clinic offers a variety of management options that have been shown through research studies to reduce or slow down the progression of myopia, especially in children. These include special types of spectacle lenses, contact lenses, Orthokeratology, and atropine eye drops. Myopia control also involves studying lifestyle and environmental factors — time spent outdoors, screen time, and more.

At MCVI, we perform tests specific to myopia development and recommend individualised treatment options. We have counselling sessions too. Our true reward is our many happy and satisfied parents and children who have better vision now with slower progression.

Prof. Monica Chaudhry is one of the pioneers in myopia management since 2017 in India with many success stories.

Pediatric Eye Examination

Pediatric eye exam at MCVI

The prevalence of eye and vision disorders is now substantial in children. Since eye and vision problems can become worse over time, early diagnosis and treatment are essential to optimise children's eye health and prevent future vision loss. Children may have eye problems which are undetected at times, and this could interfere with their performance at school. Undetected, untreated visual problems lead to vision loss that may not be treatable in later stages of life.

A comprehensive paediatric eye and vision examination by an experienced optometrist is imperative for timely diagnosis and treatment.

  • Protocol suggests examination for children as early as 6 months of age, or at least once before the age of 5 years
  • Regular eye check for children should be done every 2 years; annually for those wearing contact lenses or spectacles
  • Examination is mandatory if the child rubs eyes frequently, blinks excessively, squints, or does not maintain eye contact — this may indicate misalignment (squint)

Prof. Monica Chaudhry can perform examinations for infants and children of all age groups with accuracy. She is an expert in Lazy Eye (Amblyopia) treatment.

Low Vision

Low vision services at MCVI

Once the ophthalmologist has done the best possible treatment and yet the vision is low or partial, it requires a low vision specialist. This means that even with regular glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery, the patient may find it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Low vision can result from conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, stroke, or in children from Stargardt's, RP, ROP, and other eye conditions.

MCVI is one of the unique centres where we prescribe low vision devices to assist the visually disabled in their daily life. We can assist by providing links with counsellors or support groups to help deal with feelings related to changed vision, and guide in rehabilitation services for the visually impaired.

MCVI introduces Vision Enhancement Therapy through a vision training software program, clinically and scientifically proven to improve vision in amblyopia, eye diseases, and vision impairments including Nystagmus, Stargardt Disease, post-Lasik, post-Cataract Surgery, and Macular Degeneration.

Prof. Monica Chaudhry is a low vision expert who makes life independent and has therapy license to enhance vision at the brain perception level. She has written a book on Low Vision.
